Newell's thumps Union to remain top

Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Newell's emerged from the weekend's Argentine slate at the top of the table following its 5-0 demolition of Union on Monday.

Maxi Rodriguez, who bagged a brace on the night, opened the scoring in the 30th minute before Ignacio Scocco doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute.

The rout was on in the second half as Gabriel Heinze made it three for Newell's in the 53rd minute with his first goal of the campaign.

Rodriguez struck again in the 70th minute before Maximiliano Urruti piled more misery on Union with the final goal 10 minutes from time.

Newell's improves to 35 points to move three points clear of River Plate while Union sits fourth from bottom on 16 points. Also on Monday, San Lorenzo played to a 1-1 draw with Argentinos Juniors while Estudiantes saw its two-goal lead over Lanus evaporate when the match was suspended.

River Plate remained in the title picture with a 2-1 home win over Independiente as Juan Iturbe and Manuel Lanzini scored goals for the hosts.

Emmanuel Gigliotti scored a second-half brace to help Colon to a 2-2 draw with Atletico Rafaela, Racing downed Boca Juniors, 2-0, to leave Boca second from the bottom, Sebastian Penco scored two second-half goals to lift San Martin to a 2-0 win at Belgrano, Quilmes downed Arsenal, 2-1 and Tigre slipped by Godoy Cruz, 1-0, with the lone goal coming in the 71st minute through Sebastian Rusculleda.
