Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Saku Koivu set up Daniel Winnik's short-
handed goal in the third period before adding an empty-netter in his 1,100th
career NHL game, helping the Anaheim Ducks top the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 at
Ryan Getzlaf also had a goal and one assist for Anaheim, which rebounded from
Tuesday's 4-2 home loss to Minnesota. Rookie Frederik Andersen made 27 saves
to improve to 14-2-0 this season.
"We preach about it a lot, bouncing back after a loss," Anaheim head coach
Bruce Boudreau said. "When I talk about losing streaks following winning
streaks, you try to make it a point to not let it snowball. Not that it won't
happen, but that's what we talk about."
The Flyers began a daunting three-game sojourn through California with their
fifth loss in six games.
Steve Mason surrendered four goals on 27 shots in defeat.
Winnik lit the lamp at a critical moment in the game. With the Ducks clinging
to a 3-2 lead, Winnik took Koivu's pass on a 2-on-1 rush and beat Mason on the
glove side from the right wing at 12:26, one minute into Hampus Lindholm's
Anaheim killed off the rest of the infraction, and Koivu hit the vacated cage
with 24 seconds remaining.
Philadelphia got a goal from Michael Raffl on a shot that deflected off a
stick with 10 seconds left.
The Ducks grabbed a 1-0 lead when Patrick Maroon, a former draft pick of the
Flyers, got his stick on Francois Beauchemin's shot from the high slot and
deflected it past Mason at 10:38 of the first period.
Vincent Lecavalier tied the game on a power play at 14:35, but the
Philadelphia forward was robbed by the glove of Andersen a few minutes later.
Getzlaf redirected Lindholm's left-point shot to put Anaheim up 2-1 with 35.1
seconds to go in the opening frame.
"Obviously it changed the momentum," Philadelphia head coach Craig Berube said
of the late goal. "I thought that we had really good momentum. It changed it,
Corey Perry made it 3-1 on a rush, taking Getzlaf's pass and scoring on a
wrister from the slot at 10:29 of the second period.
Matt Read's deflection goal drew the Flyers within 3-2 at 5:48 of the third.
The Flyers have given up nine short-handed goals this season, tying Edmonton
for the most allowed in the NHL ... Philadelphia has scored a power-play goal
in five consecutive games ... Gritty Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo was activated
from injured reserve on Thursday. To make room for Rinaldo, who missed 10
games with a high ankle sprain, on the roster, the Flyers loaned forward Chris
VandeVelde to Adirondack of the American Hockey League after he cleared
