NHL Game Summary - St. Louis at Colorado
(Wednesday, February 20th)
Final Score: Colorado 1, St. Louis 0 (OT)
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - David Jones scored the game winner with 16.4
seconds left in overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 1-0 victory over
the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday at Pepsi Center.
Matt Hunwick registered the assist on Jones' tally, while Semyon Varlamov
stopped all 33 shots he faced to notch his 10th career shutout and help the
Avalanche earn their second consecutive victory.
"These guys really played some good defense tonight," Varlamov said. "They
played in their positions and certainly made it easier to play my game."
Jaroslav Halak saved 19-of-20 shots for the Blues, who were blanked for the
first time this season en route to their second straight setback.
St. Louis outshot Colorado, 31-16, in regulation, but was unable to break
through against Varlamov, who turned away all comers to send the game to an
extra session.
"We just kept going at them," St. Louis forward T.J. Oshie said. "We played
well until the overtime. I thought our overtime was awful hockey."
The Avalanche came to life in overtime, and after Paul Stastny was denied by
Halak on a 2-on-1, Jones provided the lone goal of the contest just over a
minute later.
From his own goal line, Hunwick skated the puck down the left wing and crossed
the St. Louis blue line before dropping a pass for Jones just above the left
circle.
Jones then skated into the slot and ripped a wrister that sailed high over the
glove of Halak with 16.4 ticks remaining to lift Colorado to victory.
"I just kind of took a step into the middle and I got a screen," Jones said of
his game winner. "I don't know if it hit anything. I'm just glad to get it
in. What a relief."
