NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Minnesota
(Sunday, February 17th)
Final Score: Minnesota 3, Detroit 2
St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves and Minnesota used
a strong second period to take a 3-2 win over Detroit on Sunday.
Dany Heatley, Jason Zucker and Torrey Mitchell all scored in the second period
for the Wild, who had lost five of seven coming into the game.
"We got real good production from all the lines tonight," said Zucker. "This
was a nice game to have because we've been playing poor lately."
Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist while Damien Brunner also scored for
the Red Wings, who have dropped three straight. Petr Mrazek made 21 stops in
the loss.
"We had a real good start, but we came out of the locker room in the second
period and I don't know what happened there," said Detroit head coach Mike
Babcock. "They came out strong and picked up a lot of momentum there. They
scored on our mistakes and we couldn't do anything after that."
Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Minnesota finally got on the board at the
9:35 mark of the middle frame when a backhand wraparound from the left side by
Mikko Koivu saw the rebound come out to the slot where Heatley blasted it
home.
The Wild then scored two goals in 32 seconds to take the lead.
It was a tie game at the 13:13 mark when Zucker skated down the right wing and
beat Mrazek with a quick snap-shot to the left side of the net for his first
NHL goal.
The team then took a 3-2 lead off a left circle faceoff win that saw the puck
just sitting in the circle and Mitchell sneaking it into the net.
Kuemper made seven saves in the third period and helped kill off a Nate
Prosser tripping penalty in the frame for his first career win in the NHL.
Detroit got on the board at the 8:48 mark of the first period as Datsyuk's
bouncing pass from the slot went over to the left where Brunner chipped it in
for his seventh goal of the season.
It was 2-0 for the Red Wings just 20 seconds into the middle frame when Henrik
Zetterberg sent a backhand saucer pass from the right wing to the left where
it hit the tape of Datsyuk, who snapped a high wrister into the back of the
net.
