NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Philadelphia
(Friday, March 15th)
Final Score: Philadelphia 2, New Jersey 1 (SO)
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Claude Giroux scored the winner in the
shootout as the Philadelphia Flyers took a 2-1 win over the New Jersey Devils
in the back end of a home-and-home on Friday.
In the second round, Giroux beat Johan Hedberg through the five-hole and Ilya
Bryzgalov stopped David Clarkson's attempt. After Danny Briere was stopped,
Patrik Elias missed the net on the final try as the Flyers defeated the Devils
for the first time in a shootout.
Maxime Talbot scored in the first period and Bryzgalov finished the game with
27 saves for the Flyers, who dropped a 5-2 decision in New Jersey on
Wednesday.
"We needed to win a hockey game tonight," said Philadelphia head coach Peter
Laviolette. "It was something that had to be done. We had to give ourselves a
fighting chance and credit to the guys because we came out, played a smart
game, played a hard game and ended up with two points."
Clarkson tied the game in the second period while Hedberg finished the contest
with 21 stops for the Devils, who came into the game having won three of four.
"They were more cautious in the game today than yesterday," said Hedberg.
"Obviously they weren't pinching on everything, and it seemed like they played
more tighter game than they did. I think we played a really good road game and
come down to shoot out."
The Flyers scored with 4:39 to play in the first when Matt Read fired a pass
from right to left for Simon Gagne, who glided down before sending the disc
back to the low right side where Talbot snapped it home.
New Jersey, though, tied the game 6:09 into the second period when Bryce
Salvador's shot from the left point was re-directed in by Clarkson for his
11th goal of the year.
The third period passed without a goal as Bryzgalov stopped five shots while
Hedberg needed to make just three saves. In the overtime, Bryzgalov shined
with a couple of nice stops and make six saves, compared to two for Hedberg.
