Devils' Volchenkov suspended four games for elbowing

New York, NY (Sports Network) - New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov has been suspended four games for elbowing.

Volchenkov was given the supplemental discipline Thursday after being assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for his hit on Boston's Brad Marchand during the second period of Wednesday's game.

Under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Volchenkov will forfeit $91,891.88 in pay, which goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

"Rather than make a full body check, Volchenkov extends his left elbow, making significant contact to the side of Marchand's head," explained NHL discipline czar Brendan Shanahan on the league's website. "Although Marchand, who stands 5-foot-9, is stopping and turning his head away from Volchenkov to avoid the full force of the impending check, that doesn't contribute or explain the reckless elbow contact to the head on what could have been a legal collision."

Volchenkov has one goal and three assists in 33 games this season. He will be eligible to return April 21 against the New York Rangers.
