Joe Montana torched the Broncos early and often as San Francisco scored four times on its first six drives.
The 49ers tied a Super Bowl record with their fourth Super Bowl championship (XVI, XIX and XXIII),tying the Steelers (IX, X, XIII and XIV).
Joe Montana, who was spectacular the year before when he set a record with 357 yards, raised hisgame to new heights. He completed 22-of-29 passes for 297 yards and a record five touchdowns to win the MVP trophy for a record third time. The Broncos, who had lost two of the three previousSuper Bowls by an average 25 points, made this game memorable by suffering the most humiliating loss in history. The 55 points scored broke Chicago's record of 46 points set against the Patriots in Super Bowl XX.
The 49ers wasted little time, scoring on four of their first six possessions to lead 27-3 at intermission. Jerry Rice, the Super Bowl MVP in XXIII, pulled in seven receptions for 148 yards and three touchdowns.
The Niners dominated in almost any and all statistics, primarily in first downs (28-12), net yards (461-167) and time of possession (39:31-20:29).
