Dallas turned a pair of interceptions into a 10-0 first-quarter lead. Tony Dorsett's three-yard TD run and two Efren Herrera FGs gave the Cowboys a 13-0 lead at intermission. Denver came out of the lockerroom and enjoyed a successful drive into Cowboys territory, but were forced to settle for a 47yard field goal by Jim Turner. Dallas sealed the game in the third quarter, as QB Roger Staubach hit Butch Johnson with a spectacular diving 45-yard reception in the end zone to give Dallas a 20-3 cushion. Rick Upchurch temporarily halted the onslaught with a 67-yard kickoff return setting up a one-yard TD run.
Dallas settled the issue on a halfback option when Robert Newhouse passed 29 yards to Golden Richards with 7:04 left in the game.
The game was played before 102,010,000 television viewers, the largest audience ever to watch a sporting event.
