Description: Reliever Joaquin Benoit is headed to San Diego on a two-year contract. SOURCE: Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports
Insight: The deal is going to be in the $14-15 million range. A few years ago it would have been unheard of for a setup man to make that much money but that seems to be where we're headed. He'll get a chance to close when Huston Street inevitably gets hurt again.

Description: Tigers manager Jim Leyland is expected to use Joaquin Benoit as his closer now that Jose Valverde has been designated for assignment.
Insight: Benoit has a 1.80 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and a 35/9 K/BB, compared to a 5.59 ERA for Jose Valverde. Fantasy owners should grab Benoit if he's available.

Description: Tigers manager Jim Leyland refused to name a permanent closer, but did indicate that he's leaning toward Joaquin Benoit, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com.
Insight: "I'm not naming anybody closer," Leyland said Thursday. "All I'm saying if Benoit was available right now, I would try to close with him." Benoit will be available to pitch Thursday, so he's expected to get the save chance if one arises against Boston. Benoit has a 1.80 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and a 35/9 K/BB, compared to a 5.59 ERA for Jose Valverde. Valverde allowed five hits and four earned runs in the ninth inning Wednesday with Detroit already down 9-3. Fantasy owners should grab Benoit if he's available.

Description: Detroit manager Jim Leyland will continue to use Joaquin Benoit as the closer until a better candidate emerges. SOURCE: Detroit Tigers on Twitter
Insight: There's still a chance that Jose Valverde (currently in extended spring training) could take over the ninth inning role at some point this season but until we hear otherwise, it looks like the job is Benoit's to lose.

Description: Tigers manager Jim Leyland says the he would like Joaquin Benoit to emerge as the closer due to his ability to get out both right-handed and left-handed batters. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, FOXSports.com
Insight: The Tigers signed Jose Valverde to a minor league contract this week after Phil Coke blew a save. If you're looking to make a speculative add for short-term saves, Benoit is the guy.

Description: Joaquin Benoit will be used in save opportunities while Jose Valverde is out with a sore back.
Insight: Benoit (.287) has been extremely effective as a setup man this year for Detroit, leading the majors in holds with ten. Valverde is hoping to be healthy enough to resume his closer duties in the next few days so if you're looking for a long-term solution for saves, Benoit probably isn't your best option.

Description: Benoit will miss at least half of the season after undergoing rotator cuff surgery, according to the AP.
Insight: Benoit spent part of 2008 on the DL with shoulder inflammation, so he was probably headed toward surgery sooner or later. He has been an above average strikeout reliever for the past four years. (SportsBuff.com)
