Insight: Kazmir struck out nine over six scoreless innings but was spotted in the dugout talking to manager Bob Melvin and the team trainer while holding his left forearm during the seventh inning. A scout told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that Kazmir's velocity dropped in his last inning and he was wiggling his fingers a lot after one pitch.

Insight: After sitting out all but 1 2/3 innings in 2011 and all of 2012, Kazmir revived his career with the Indians last season. He went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP and 162 Ks in 158 innings and had a 3.06 ERA in his final 103 innings.

Insight: Kazmir was scratched from Monday's start with triceps tightness. The Athletics rotation has been hit hard by injuries in the past week with A.J. Griffin suffering an elbow injury and Jarrod Parker needing Tommy John surgery, so it's good to see that Kazmir's injury is minor.

Insight: It's been a bad few days for Oakland hurlers. The A's learned Monday that Jarrod Parker needs Tommy John surgery, A.J. Griffin is expected to start the season on the DL due to elbow issues and now Kazmir is dealing with an injury. The good news is that Athletics assistant GM David Forst said Kazmir's injury is minor and he may start Tuesday.

Insight: Kazmir was 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP last season in Cleveland. He was especially good in September, going 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.214 WHIP in the season's final month.

Insight: Carlos Carrasco will start Wednesday in place of Kazmir, and the lefty will get an extra 2-3 days off before making his next start. Kazmir has been a nice surprise for the Indians this year, going 7-5 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 114 innings, but he threw exactly 1 2/3 innings in the big leagues in 2011-12 due to arm issues.
