Description: The Red Sox released righthander Jose Contreras on Monday.
Insight: He didn't appear in any games for the Sox. The 41-year-old could opt for retirement if he doesn't find any good offers.

Description: Jose Contreras was scooped up by the Red Sox on Friday.
Insight: Pittsburgh dropped Contreras earlier this week. With Andrew Bailey headed for surgery, Boston is looking for as much bullpen depth as possible. Koji Uehara will remain the closer so Contreras won't be worth picking up in fantasy leagues.

Description: For the second time in the last two months, the Pirates have released Jose Contreras.
Insight: In seven games for Pittsburgh this season, Contreras is 0-0 with an ERA of 9.00. The 41-year-old righthander has played for four teams since 2009. At this point, it might be time to call it a career.

Description: Jose Contreras, who is out for the year after tearing his UCL pitching Friday night against the Marlins, says that he'll undergo rehab and try to pitch in the majors again rather than simply retiring.
Insight: Who knows what the market will be for the 40-year-old reliever who is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. In 17 appearances in 2012, Contreras went 1-0 with a 5.27 ERA.

4/15/2012 3:48:00 PM
Description: Jose Contreras (elbow) has finished his rehab assignment and is slated to return from the disabled list later this week.
Insight: Contreras should help the Phillies bullpen but as a middle reliever, he's unlikely to be much of a factor in fantasy baseball this season.

3/30/2011
Description: The (Delaware) News Journal reports that Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says he's leaning toward Contreras to step in as closer while Brad Lidge is out.
Insight: The manager didn't commit to it completely, but we're close enough to the regular season for a lean to count. Contreras' 1.22 WHIP with the Phils last season was his best since his rookie campaign. He also converted four of five save chances. Obviously, anyone who's closing for one of the best teams in baseball belongs on a fantasy roster in pretty much every league. (RapidDraft.com)
