American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Texas
(Saturday, April 6th)
Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 8, Texas 4
Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Albert Pujols hit two home runs and finished with three RBI as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the Texas Rangers, 8-4, on Saturday.
Mark Trumbo added a two-run homer and Peter Bourjos knocked in a solo shot for the Angels, who saw starter Tommy Hanson (1-0) allow three runs on six hits over six innings.
"I felt pretty comfortable at the plate," said Pujols. "When you feel comfortable at the plate, you don't feel like you have to chase balls. You see the ball pretty good, and that's what I did today. Hopefully, I can continue to do that."
Mitch Moreland, Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz each hit solo homers for the Rangers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. David Murphy had an RBI triple in defeat.
Texas starter Matt Harrison (0-2) gave up five runs on eight hits and walked four over five innings.
"There's no excuses," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "You take back a few pitches that you didn't hit his spots with, and maybe it's a different ball game. But today, they came out and jumped on us. They're capable of swinging the bat. He made some mistakes with location and they made him pay for it."
The Angels went big immediately in the first. After a one-out double by Erick Aybar, Pujols hit a home run deep into center to put the first runs on the board. Josh Hamilton then walked and Trumbo hit a home run on the first pitch to give his team an early 4-0 lead.
In the second, Chris Iannetta hit a leadoff single and Bourjos reached first base on a bunt. Mike Trout then grounded out, but was able to advance the runners before Aybar hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Iannetta home.
Moreland hit his home run with one out in the third. After Leonys Martin struck out, Kinsler homered to center to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Bourjos knocked a leadoff homer in the sixth. Three batters later, Pujols hit his second home run of the game, coming on a 2-2 pitch from Joe Ortiz, for a 7-2 Angels' lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Elvis Andrus hit a leadoff single and stole second base. Lance Berkman and Adrian Beltre both recorded outs, but with Murphy batting, Hanson threw a wild pitch to allow Andrus to reach third. On the next pitch, Murphy delivered an RBI triple.
Cruz was up next, but he struck out on three pitches to end the inning.
Trumbo had a leadoff double in the seventh and Howie Kendrick reached first base after a fielding error by Beltre. Alberto Callaspo hit a sacrifice bunt to Ortiz to advance the runners before Iannetta hit a sacrifice fly that scored Trumbo.
Ernesto Frieri came to pitch in the ninth for the Angels. He allowed a leadoff home run to Cruz, but got A.J. Pierzynski to ground out and struck out Moreland and Martin to end the game.
