Twins top Tigers, end 10-game skid
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins were looking to create some offense after managing to record just one hit off Anibal Sanchez and the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
The Twins were able to do so, scoring three runs in the first inning and snapping a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the third of a four-game series at Comerica Park.
Joe Mauer, who broke up the potential no-hitter in the ninth inning on Friday, went 3-for-4 with a home run, while Justin Morneau and Chris Parmelee contributed an RBI apiece for the Twins.
Minnesota starter P.J. Walters (1-0), who made his season debut, allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings. Glen Perkins pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his ninth save.
Jhonny Peralta had a solo homer and Torii Hunter drove in one run for the Tigers, who won the first two games of this series. Doug Fister (5-2) had seven strikeouts and gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk over seven frames.
Mauer's solo shot came with one out in the first, but the ball bounced off the yellow line, prompting an umpire review that upheld the on-field call
Josh Willingham then drew a walk and scored on a Morneau double. Two batters later, Parmelee singled, scoring Morneau.
With runners on first and second in the third, Justin Morneau grounded into a double play. Joe Mauer, who had advanced to third, was sent back to second due to interference. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire came out to argue the call and was ejected.
The Tigers got on the board in the fifth. Hunter's two-out double brought Andy Dirks home to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Peralta's solo shot came with two outs in the sixth.
Twins center fielder Wilkin Ramirez made a inning-ending catch on an Omar Infante fly near the warning track in left center but collided with Willingham on the play. He left the game but was ok after being looked at by trainers.
Perkins came to pitch in the ninth. He gave up a single to Brayan Pena, but got the next two batters to end the game.
Walters threw 80 pitches ... Morneau has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games at Comerica Park ... Mauer is hitting .415 (34-for-82) in May ... The Twins were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
