Howard worthy of a waiver claim

Jimmy Howard has a 2.14 GAA and a 0.928 save percentage in 28 games this year.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard is finally getting his chance to shine and the 25-year-old is doing just that.

Howard, who had compiled a 1-5 record in spot duty with Detroit since the 2005-06 season, has played in 28 games this year with a 16-9-2 record, a solid 2.14 GAA and a 0.928 save percentage. He has supplanted veteran Chris Osgood as the team's No.1 goalie, which is saying a lot since it was just 2007-08 that Osgood and Dominik Hasek won the Williams M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals scored against.

Osgood wasn't nearly as good in 2008-09 yielding a goal-a-game more (2.09- to-3.09) and saving less (0.914-to-0.887). That opened up the door for Howard and he has taken advantage.

You can take advantage too, as Howard is only owned in 68% of all fantasy leagues. You'd better hurry though, that number was 65% just two days ago, so people are finally starting to catch on.

Howard got most of his goaltending experience at the University of Maine and the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. He also played in the under-18 U.S. National Team Development Program.

This is his first shot at a starting NHL position and it doesn't look like he's planning on giving it up anytime soon. Particularly, since the 37-year-old Osgood hasn't wowed anyone of late, going 7-6-4 with a 2.72 GAA.
