2009-10 Final Left Winger Rankings

Alex Ovechkin cracked the 100-point mark for the fourth time in five seasons.
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The No.1 overall pick should be as reliable as Old Faithful and the 2009-10 TSN Fantasy Left Winger Award goes to a player almost as consistent as the Yellowstone National Park geyser. He is none other than Washington winger Alex Ovechkin.

In his five NHL seasons, Ovechkin has never scored less than 46 goals, 46 assists or not led the league in shots on goal. In 2009-10, despite missing 10 games with various injuries and suspensions, Ovechkin continued to produce at a very high level. He cracked the 100-point mark for the fourth time in five seasons while leading the Caps to a 54-15-13 record, good enough for the top spot in the NHL Southeast Division.

Although Ovechkin didn't lead the league in scoring (second to Vancouver centerman Henrik Sedin), he easily outdistanced all left wing competition by at least 24 points. Throw in a league-leading 368 shots, a position leading 36 power play points and a higher than average number of penalty minutes and you have to vote for Ovechkin. Zach Parise finished a distance second with his New Jersey Devils teammate Ilya Kovalchuk third.

Patrick Sharp has been around for six plus seasons and except for 2007-08 (36G, 26A) hasn't gotten much fantasy attention. Throw in a knee sprain last season which cost him 16 games and people may have overlooked him on Draft Day (ADP 208). Sharp returned to form and posted a solid 66-point season with 16 power play point and a very respectable 266 shots. He'll be drafted much higher next season. Given his 18th-round selection and his seventh-place finish at left wing, Sharp wins the "Best Bargain Award."

With an ADP of 34, Montreal Canadians winger Michael Cammalleri was expected to be a cornerstone to his fantasy owner's roster. He was coming off an 82-point effort in 2008-09. Unfortunately, Cammalleri dropped significantly in five of the six categories and for that reason "wins" the Most Disappointing Award for 2009-10.
