Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
There you were, cruising to the 2009 fantasy baseball title, or at least you were in the chase and the injury bug has caught up to you.
For me, it just hit - Tim Lincecum, the anchor to my roster, has been scratched from tonight's game. At first they said undisclosed injury, now they are talking "back injury," but if it can keep him out of one game, it could keep him out for a week or more.
Or Cliff Lee had become your stopper and then he suddenly forgot how to pitch. What happened to the guy who was mowing down National League hitters like they were nothing and gave up just three earned runs in five starts?
Or Michael Young? Adam Jones? Curtis Granderson? Joe Mauer? Carlos Pena? Josh Hamilton? Aaron Hill? Chipper Jones? Brian McCann? Troy Tulowitzki? Roy Oswalt? Ryan Braun? They're all injured to some degree.
Oh sure, some of you aren't thinking baseball anymore, what with the start of a new NFL season less than 48 hours away.
But what of those of us still fighting for a baseball championship? What is an owner to do?
I don't have much for you. The waiver list is full of suspects. Unless you have a solid bench, you have to hope that the injury isn't going to last for long.
There is Seth Smith in Colorado who has had a pretty good week, batting .519 with four HRs, 10 RBIs and an OPS of 1.766. Ian Stewart, Smith's teammate on the Rockies (.300 with 4 HRs and an OPS of 1.317), Carlos Gonzalez (.375 with 3 HRs, OPS of 1.214), Juan Uribe (.360, 4 HRs, OPS 1.389) and Chris Young of Arizona (.318, 4 HRs, OPS 1.239).
If those guys can't help you, did you hear that the NFL season begins on Thursday night?
