NFL Fantasy Player of the Week - Week 9
By Steve Schwarz, Fantasy Sports Editor
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Running backs have been "missing in action" over the last few weeks, but even when 13 different guys earned the 100-yard bonus in Week 9, another quarterback stole the spotlight.
Nick Foles, Philadelphia - Fortunately, most fantasy owners who picked inconsistent and injury-prone Michael Vick were wise enough to also select his handcuff, Foles, later in the draft. That has proved useful as Foles has played very well in two of the three games he's started this season. In Sunday's rout of Oakland, Foles gave us a pretty good impression of Peyton Manning against Baltimore in the season opener producing 406 passing yards and seven touchdowns worth 48 fantasy points. In one of my leagues with numerous yardage bonuses and long TD pass bonuses the total reached 73 points.
Tom Brady, New England - Just when we were about to jump off the Brady bandwagon, ole' Tom remembered how to throw the football. Brady's big day pushed three different receivers over the 100-yard mark as he earned 33 fantasy points with his best performance of the season. Too bad a bye week and then a tough Carolina defense will interupt his suddenly hot hand.
Running Backs -
Chris Johnson, Tennessee - Johnson wasn't doing much in the first half, but exploded with a two-touchdown, 98-yard finish to earn 29 points for his fantasy owners.
Zac Stacy, St. Louis - Playing opposite Johnson, Stacy continues to show he's a workhorse back with huge potential. The Rams gave him 33 touches for 178 yards from scrimmage (127 rushing) and two touchdowns to tie Johnson for best at his position in Week 9.
Wide Receivers -
Andre Johnson, Houston - Johnson was wide open all night long and the Texans' new starting quarterback, Case Keenum, didn't miss him. Johnson's nine receptions totaled 229 yards and three touchdowns to more than double his previous best this season. With a game against Oakland (see Foles) another matchup with Indy and two games against Jacksonville over the next six weeks Johnson may end up being the best fantasy receiver down the stretch.
T.Y. Hilton, Indianapolis - In the first half the Colts couldn't figure out how to get their passing game going without centerpiece Reggie Wayne, but after the break they featured Hilton, and didn't that work out for all concerned. Hilton caught six balls in the second half for 115 yards and three scores worth 30 fantasy points.
Tight Ends -
Jimmy Graham, New Orleans - After playing just 18 snaps the previous week, Graham played 56 of 74 in the game against the Jets catching nine of 12 targets for 116 yards and two scores.
Rob Gronkowski, New England - The tight end position is once again a two-man affair with all others simply pretenders to the crown. "Gronk" had his second big day in three starts this season with eight receptions for 143 yards and a score.
Nick Folk, New York Jets - Following a 4-for-4 Sunday afternoon, Folk is now 23-for-23 on field goal attempts this season along with 14-for-14 on extra points. In other words, he's still perfect on the season. His 16 fantasy points against the Saints on Sunday led the position.
Defense/Special Teams -
Kansas City Chiefs - With the Chiefs offense in a funk, the defense took matters into their own hands in the final two quarters and scored on a 100- yard interception return and an 11-yard fumble return to preserve their undefeated record.
And the winner of the NFL Fantasy Player of the Week for Week 9 is ... Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. While Philadelphia coach Chip Kelly may not have the perfect quarterback for his system and might look for a long-term solution in next year's draft (perhaps Marcus Mariota), Foles sure looks like he could be the best answer for the remainder of this season.
