CCSU football player dies in car accident
New Britain, CT (Sports Network) - Football player Rich Royster was one of two Central Connecticut State University students who were killed in a car accident this past weekend.
The CCSU campus continues to mourn the loss of Royster, a 20-year-old junior defensive tackle from Ossining, N.Y., and his girlfriend, 24-year-old senior Brittany Mariani of Ludlow, Mass., who were killed at about 4:45 a.m. Saturday on the Charter Oak Bridge south of Hartford. They were both psychology majors.
Royster spent one season at Iona before transferring to CCSU in 2009. He was a member of the Blue Devils' 2009 Northeast Conference championship squad and had 22 sacks and 1.5 sacks in 2010.
CCSU football coach Jeff McInerney and senior captain Alondre Rush spoke about Royster during a press conference on campus.
"Rich was a fantastic teammate, a loyal Blue Devil," McInerney said. "His love of the game was second to none. His love of his teammates was second to none. He will be missed. His spirit and character will live on through our football program and his memory will be honored every day."
