SIU safety McElroy granted another season
Carbondale, IL (Sports Network) - The NCAA granted Southern Illinois senior safety Mike McElroy a medical hardship waiver to play next season after an ankle injury cost him nearly all of the 2010 season.
McElroy was injured in the second game of the season at Illinois on Sept. 11. After having surgery, he did not play again.
"I'm just excited about it," McElroy said of being granted one more season. "I don't feel that I have anything to prove, but I want to be able to go out on top."
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound strong safety, a three-year starter who had seven interceptions in 2009, entered the 2010 season on the Watch List for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is bestowed on the FCS' outstanding defensive player. The award is presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com.
"With all the preseason accolades coming into last year, I was really hoping for a great season," McElroy said. "I felt that I got off to a good start, so I want to get back to that level that I was playing at."
In 6 1/2 quarters of play last season. McElroy had nine tackles and an interception against Illinois before he was injured.
