(Thursday, September 1st)

Final Score: Syracuse 36, Wake Forest 29 (OT)

Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Ryan Nassib threw a four-yard TD pass to Van Chew in overtime as the Syracuse Orange battled back to capture a thrilling 36-29 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in non-conference action at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse (1-0) trailed by 15 points with just over 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but Nassib brought the home team back as he finished with three TD passes overall in the victory. The Syracuse signal-caller finished the night 20-of-28 for 178 yards, while running back Antwon Bailey contributed a game-high 114 yards and a pair of TDs on the ground in the triumph.

The Demon Deacons (0-1) were paced by quarterback Tanner Price who converted 18-of-31 for 289 yards and three scores, but he was also sacked twice and left the game early with an apparent knee injury. Receiver Chris Givens recorded seven catches for a career-high 170 yards and two TDs in the losing cause.

Wake Forest kicker Jimmy Newman put the visitors on the board first with a 38- yard field goal in the first quarter. Newman made it a 6-0 advantage early in the second frame when he knocked through a 37-yard effort.

The first points of the season for Syracuse came on a 20-yard touchdown strike from Nassib to Nick Provo with 9:29 left in the first half.

Unfortunately for the hometown fans, the lead was short-lived as the Demon Deacons scored on their very next possession, thanks to a 60-yard TD pass from Price to Givens. Later in the period Wake added to the advantage with a 16-yard TD pass from Price to Michael Campanaro to make the score 20-7 at the break. Campanaro set a career high with seven receptions on the night.

The Orange was flagged five times for a loss of 56 yards through the first 30 minutes of action, all while producing just 52 yards of total offense.

Syracuse closed the gap late in the third quarter when, after being flagged for roughing the passer, the Demon Deacons allowed Bailey to slip into the end zone from a yard out, making the score 20-14.

Just before the end of the third, Price guided the visitors back into the end zone on a 22-yard strike to Givens, but a failed PAT left the Deacons with a 12-point edge heading into the fourth period.

Newman made up for his failed kick by knocking through a 40-yard field goal to push the advantage to 29-14 before Syracuse began its comeback bid.

Capping an eight-play, 73-yard drive, Nassib hit Adam Harris for a two-yard TD to make the score 29-21 with 8:26 remaining in regulation.

Barely a minute later Bailey raced 53 yards into the end zone and thanks to a successful two-point conversion the score was locked at 29-29.

After Syracuse scored the go-ahead TD in overtime the Demon Deacons had a chance to match, but on fourth down a pass from backup Ted Stachitas intended for Givens went unanswered, leaving the Orange with the triumph.

Syracuse grabbed the win despite converting just 3-of-11 on third down and running 26 fewer offensive plays than the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest won the only previous meeting between the schools by a score of 20-10 back in 2006.
