Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Carey Spear hit a 31-yard field goal with 2:56
remaining and the Vanderbilt defense held on en route to a 24-21 win over
Quarterback Larry Smith completed 12-of-24 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown
to lead Vanderbilt (2-0), although he did throw two interceptions. Running back
Jerron Seymour added 70 yards on eight carries and another score for the
Running back Lyle McCombs rushed for 118 yards on 27 carries for Connecticut
(1-1), which put up just 193 yards and turned the ball over four times.
Quarterback Johnny McEntee completed just 10-of-27 balls for 99 yards and three
Connecticut's kicker David Teggart got the scoring started with a 25 yard field
goal at the 7:46 mark of the first quarter. Vanderbilt followed with two first
quarter scores of its own, including a 42-yard touchdown pass from Smith to
receiver Chris Boyd and a 40-yard touchdown run from Seymour that made it 14-3
with 1:29 to play in the first quarter.
Teggart added a 28-yard field goal with just under ten minutes to play in the
third quarter, and the Huskies proceeded to take the lead after Byron Jones
scored a touchdown off a blocked punt in the end zone with 7:47 to play in the
Connecticut's Yawin Smallwood returned a Vanderbilt fumble 64 yards for a
touchdown with 10:34 to play in the game, and McEntee found receiver Ryan
Griffin for the two-point conversion to make it 21-14.
That's when Vanderbilt mounted its comeback. Cornerback Casey Hayward picked
McEntee off around midfield and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to tie the
game with 6:45 remaining. Smith then drove the team 45 yards in six plays to
set up Spear's eventual game winner.
Vanderbilt's 2-0 start is the first Commodore winning streak since 2008.
