(Friday, October 1st)
Final Score: Utah State 31, BYU 16
Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Derrvin Speight recorded 91 yards and two
touchdowns on 23 carries as Utah State topped BYU for the first time since
1993 with a 31-16 decision in a non-conference clash at Romney Stadium.
Diondre Borel finished 10-of-13 for 192 yards and one touchdown while
rushing for another score for the Aggies (2-3), who snapped a two-game slide
heading into a test at Louisiana Tech next Saturday.
Xavier Martin had a 79-yard touchdown reception for the victors.
Jake Heaps was 27-of-55 for 270 yards and two interceptions for the Cougars
(1-4), who have lost four in a row since beating Washington in the season-
JJ Di Luigi and Bryan Kariya each posted a rushing TD in defeat.
Utah State took a 10-0 lead after one quarter thanks to Borel's 79-yard
connection to Martin and a 34-yard field goal from Braeden Loveless.
Borel called his own number to make it 17-0 with under seven minutes to play
in the second, and after a Mitch Payne 23-yarder got BYU on the board, Speight
had a one-yard TD run for a 24-3 game at the break.
Speight added another one-yard scoring plunge in the third, followed by
Kariya's one-yard score for the Cougars.
Di Luigi's three-yard touchdown run in the final seconds pulled BYU within 15,
but the extra point try was blocked.
