Fort Lauderdale, FL (Sports Network) - Jeff Van Camp threw for 183 yards and
three touchdowns to lead the Florida Atlantic Owls to a 24-23 decision over
the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a Sun Belt Conference tilt at Lockhart Stadium.
Alfred Morris, who hauled in one of the touchdown pass, led the ground game
for FAU (4-5, 3-3 SunBelt) with 143 yards on 22 carries.
Blaine Gautier threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns for Louisiana (2-8,
2-4), and also led the team's rushing attack by rumbling for 86 yards and one
The Owls dominated the first 15 minutes of action, and went into the second
quarter with a 14-0 lead. The first score for FAU came on a four-yard
touchdown pass from Van Camp to Xavier Stinson.
Van Camp tossed another score later in the opening frame, connecting with
Lester Jean for a 45-yard scoring strike.
The lone score in the second quarter came from Gautier, who found Ladarius
Green for a 17-yard touchdown in the final minute of the first half.
The Owls extended their lead to 21-7 midway through the third quarter when Van
Camp tossed his third touchdown, connecting with Morris for a 16-yard score.
However, the Ragin' Cajuns responded with a 14-play, 83-yard drive that was
capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run by Gautier.
Ross Gornall's 23-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter put the Owls up
by a 10-point margin.
ULL continued to fight however, and cut its deficit to seven points with just
under five minutes remaining in regulation, thanks to a 37-yard kick by Brett
With less than two minutes left in the contest, Vernon Wolfe hauled in a 43-
yard touchdown pass from Gautier, but instead of kicking the extra point and
going for the tie, coach Rickey Bustle decided to go for a two-point
conversion. Unfortunately the gamble did not pay off for the Cajuns, who
ultimately suffered a one-point loss.
