NCAA Game Summary - San Diego State at Air Force
(Saturday, September 26th)
Final Score: Air Force 26, San Diego State 14
USAF Academy, CO (Sports Network) - The Air Force Falcons scored a pair of
defensive touchdowns on the afternoon, making it that much easier for the
academy to defeat San Diego State, 26-14, in Mountain West Conference action
at Falcon Stadium.
Overall the Falcons (3-1, 2-0 MWC) recorded two fumble recoveries and picked
off four passes in the contest and needed four field goals by Erik Soderberg
to get them into the win column.
Air Force quarterback Connor Dietz, who was filling in for an injured Tim
Jefferson, completed 3-of-6 passing for 51 yards, while Savier Stephens led
the way on the ground with his 11 carries for 71 yards.
The Aztecs (1-3, 0-1) were paced by quarterback Ryan Lindley who completed 24-
of-41 passing for 284 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but he was also sacked
three times and had four passes intercepted in a game that wasn't as close as
the final score indicates.
Reggie Rembert, back for just his second game following a suspension, returned
a fumble 47 yards for the first defensive TD of the game for the home team.
With a pair of field goals by Soderberg from 21 and 48 yards away, the academy
held a 13-0 advantage early in the second quarter.
San Diego State scored its first points of the afternoon on a safety at the
8:55 mark of the second frame.
Soderberg finished off the first half by converting a 20-yard field goal as
time expired, providing Air Force with a 16-2 edge at the break.
Soderberg struck again in the third, this time with a 41-yard effort, and
Anthony Wright picked off a Lindley pass and returned it 47 yards for a score
to provide the Falcons with a 26-2 lead heading into the final period.
SDSU wideout Vincent Brown, who finished with 10 catches for 123 yards, caught
a pair of touchdowns in the final three and a half minutes of regulation, the
first on a three-yard effort and the other a 30-yard heave as time expired,
collecting a batted ball and crossing the goal line for the inconsequential
score.
The Falcons gained 243 yards on 58 rushing attempts on the day, while the
defense for the academy limited the Aztecs to a mere 39 yards on 25 carries.
With the victory the Falcons, who have taken three straight from SDSU, have
now won two in a row and are the first team in the MWC with a pair of league
victories.
San Diego State is now just 4-11 at Falcon Stadium and trails in the overall
series with the academy by a count of 19-9.
