East Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Andre Dixon rushed for 73 yards and three
touchdowns, as the Connecticut Huskies ran away with a 56-31 win over the
Syracuse Orange in Big East play at Rentschler Field.
Jordan Todman piled up 123 rushing yards and a score in helping UConn (6-5,
2-4 Big East) become bowl eligible. Zach Frazer threw for 173 yards and tossed
a pair of touchdown passes to Marcus Easley, who finished with 105 yards on
Greg Paulus completed 24-of-32 passes for 296 yards and two TDs for the Orange
(4-8, 1-6), who fall to 0-4 on the road this season. Alex Lemon caught nine
passes for 140 yards and a score in the loss, while Delone Carter carried 20
times for 102 yards and a TD.
The Huskies struck first when Dixon scored on a four-yard run at the 9:47 mark
of the opening quarter.
The Orange answered with a 12-play drive that ate up nearly seven minutes, but
they had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Ryan Lichtenstein.
UConn's Mike Lang returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to put
the Huskies on top, 14-3 with 2:37 remaining in the first quarter.
Syracuse cut the deficit to 14-10 on Ryan Nassib's four-yard touchdown pass to
Mike Owen at the 13:38 mark of the second quarter.
Midway through the same quarter, the Huskies pushed their lead to 21-10 on
Todman's 37-yard touchdown scamper.
Syracuse continued to battle back, as Paulus found Lemon for a three-yard
scoring strike with 1:08 to play until halftime.
But UConn put together a five-play, 63-yard drive, and Dixon scored his second
touchdown of the day on a one-yard plunge with six seconds on the clock.
UConn made it a 35-17 game midway through the third quarter, when Frazer
hooked up with Easley for an eight-yard touchdown pass.
Syracuse still refused to go away, as Paulus connected with Lavar Lobdell for
a 12-yard touchdown pass to trim the deficit to 11 with 14:55 to play in the
Dixon gave the Huskies some more breathing room with his third touchdown run
of the day, this time from 45 yards out, as UConn extended its lead to 42-24
with 12:37 to play.
Three minutes later, Syracuse made it a 42-31 game on Carter's 10-yard
But UConn sealed it with Easley's 28-yard touchdown reception from Frazer in
the final minute, and Dwayne Gratz added another score on a fumble recovery and
UConn managed to win despite being out-gained in total offense, 489-377.
