Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Russell Wilson threw three touchdown passes and
ran for another as he led the NC State Wolfpack to a 38-31 win over the
Maryland Terrapins in ACC play at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Wilson finished the outing 25-of-38 for 343 yards and survived three
interceptions as the Wolfpack (4-5, 1-4 ACC) snapped a four-game slide. Toney
Baker contributed a team-best 75 yards rushing on 19 attempts as well.
The Terps (2-7, 1-4), losers of four straight and six of the last seven, were
paced by Davin Meggett and Chris Turner who both scored a touchdown on the
ground for the visitors. Turner, who left the game with an apparent left leg
injury, was 12-of-19 for 135 yards and an interception before being taken out.
Backup quarterback Jamarr Robinson was 5-of-11 for a mere 27 yards through the
NC State put the first points of the day on the board on a 17-yard touchdown
pass from Wilson to George Bryan less than a minute into the contest.
Maryland responded with a one-yard run by Meggett less than four minutes
later, locking the score at 7-7.
The Pack's Donald Bowens reeled in a 35-yard TD pass from Wilson to put the
home team back on top by a score of 14-7.
The Maryland defense then got in on the act as linebacker Alex Wujciak picked
off a pass and brought it back 70 yards to again knot the score, this time at
Before the end of the first quarter, NC State's Josh Czajkowski knocked
through a 48-yard field goal to cap a 10-play, 42-yard drive.
Alternating scores, it was time for the Terps to put more points on the board
as Turner made his way into the end zone on a one-yard run, pushing Maryland
ahead finally at 21-17.
Midway through the second frame the Pack responded and again regained the
advantage, thanks to an 18-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Darrell Davis,
giving NC State a 24-21 edge at the break.
The Pack extended the lead to double digits on the strength of a two-yard
touchdown run by Wilson with 10:19 to play in the third quarter. But on the
ensuing kickoff, Torrey Smith raced 82 yards into the end zone to again draw
Maryland within striking distance at 31-28.
Capping an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ate up more than five minutes on the
clock, Jamelle Eugene hit the end zone on a two-yard run to make the score
A 31-yard field goal by Maryland's Nick Ferrara cut the deficit to a
touchdown, but it was too little, too late as the Pack grabbed the overdue
NC State ripped off 482 yards of total offense on the afternoon, compared to
just 270 yards for the visitors. Maryland suffered a total of 10 penalties,
resulting in a loss of 91 yards.
With the victory the Wolfpack not only snaps a three-game slide versus
Maryland, they also knot the series up at 31-31-4 as well.
