GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans will try to extend to a season-long three-game win streak tonight when they host the reeling Citadel Bulldogs in Southern Conference action at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Spartans are coming off a 66-60 win over Appalachian State last Saturday. Freshman Tevon Saddler and junior Nicholas Paulos each scored 13 points for UNC Greensboro, which improved to 2-1 in SoCon action.
Junior forward Kyle Cain recorded his league-leading sixth double-double of the season after scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, as the Spartans finished the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field while holding Appalachian State to just 34.5 percent.
UNCG, which has already matched its win total from a season ago with nine wins in 18 games, took the lead for good with a key 12-5 run. Nicholas Paulos started the run with a 3-pointer, and Cain capped it with a driving layup with 1:28 left in the game for a 61-50 lead.
Cain leads the Spartans is scoring with 15.4 ppg and in rebounds with 8.7 rpg. Kayel Locke adds 12.3 ppg and Tevon Saddler registers 12.1 ppg for Greensboro, which averages just 71.3 ppg as a team on 45.5 percent shooting.
The Citadel comes in on a different kind of streak. The Bulldogs lost their sixth straight last Saturday, falling in a 74-65 decision to Elon.
Matt Van Scyoc scored 16 points to lead The Citadel, which used a 9-4 run midway through the second half to draw within 63-56, but that was as close as the team would get.
Brian White added 13 points for the Bulldogs, losers of 10 of 11 overall and all nine road games this season.
Van Scyoc leads the Bulldogs with 14.8 ppg, while White is next with 13.8 ppg and a team-best 7.1 rpg. Ashton Moore rounds out the double figure scorers with 10.9 ppg for The Citadel, which nets only 69.9 ppg and is scoring just 64.5 ppg during its current losing streak.
UNCG has won the last six games in this series and with the game being at home, it's hard to see the Bulldogs mounting enough offense to be a serious threat.
