(Saturday, January 25th)
Final Score: San Diego 65, Portland 63
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Dennis Kramer notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to help the San Diego Toreros edge out the Portland Pilots 65-63 in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center.
Johnny Dee tallied 21 points on 7-of-10 from the field for the Toreros (12-10, 3-6 WCC), who got back into the win column after back-to-back losses. Christopher Anderson helped the team with eight assists.
Kevin Bailey totaled 21 points to lead the Pilots (12-9, 4-5), who have lost two of their last three. Riley Barker scored 10 points and Ryan Nicholas grabbed 11 rebounds.
The first half was an evenly matched contest with the Pilots shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 11-of-13 at the free-throw line. Despite a better 60 percent shooting performance, the Toreros went into halftime trailing 42-41.
Both teams went cold offensively in the second half, with the Toreros shooting just 38.1 percent from the floor. Even worse, however, was their opponent, who shot a mere 27.3 percent on field goal tries and got to the foul line for just 1-of-2. After scoring the first points of the half on a Dee jumper, San Diego never trailed again. The Pilots got within a point, with 30 seconds left, but their inconsistent shooting prevented them from completing the comeback.
In the tightly contested game, neither side led by more than nine points.
