Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Missouri State Bears received 18 points apiece from Jarmar Gulley and Marcus Marshall, as they outlasted the Old Dominion Monarchs in overtime, 79-67, in the season opener at the Constant Convocation Center.
Gulley added nine rebounds for Missouri State (1-0), and while Marshall shot just 4-of-16 from the field, he made up for it with a stellar showing from the foul line (9-of-10). Austin Ruder chipped in 14 points, with most of his damage coming from 3-point territory (4-of-7).
For ODU (0-1), Aaron Bacote led all scorers with a career-high 28 points. Richard Ross tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks off the bench. Dimitri Batten chipped in 12 points, but he did so on just 3-of-21 from the floor, including 1-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Neither team shot greater than 37 percent from the field in the first half, but Missouri State used an 8-2 run late in the frame to take a 30-28 advantage into intermission.
After trailing by as many as seven in the second half, ODU climbed back to take an eight-point lead with 7:01 remaining on a Bacote layup. Missouri State chipped away down the stretch, however, and a pair of Marshall free throws with a minute remaining tied the score up at 63-63. Both teams missed on opportunities in the final minute and the game went to overtime.
The extra session was dominated by Missouri State, which shot 4-of-6 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to put the game away.
The Bears held a 52-44 rebounding advantage and also outscored the Monarchs at the foul line, 26-14.
