Akron, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Demetrius Treadwell led the way with 14 points as the Akron Zips edged the Kent State Golden Flashes, 58-54, in a Mid-American Conference clash at James A. Rhodes Arena.
For the Zips (20-11, 12-6 MAC), winners of three-straight, Deji Ibitayo added 11 points. Akron ends its season with a 12-6 record in conference play.
Kellon Thomas led all scorers with 14 points for the Golden Flashes (16-15, 7-11), while Khaliq Spicer chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Kent State shot 46.4 percent from the field in the first half, but was just 1- of-6 from beyond the arc. The Golden Flashes took a 32-27 lead into halftime, and held Akron to just 37.5 percent shooting.
After the break, the Zips were much more accurate, connecting on 45.8 percent of their field goal tries. The Golden Flashes struggled in the second, hitting on a woeful 21.6 percent of their shots from the field, including 2-of-13 from 3-point distance. Trailing 51-50 with just over four minutes to play, the Zips scored five-straight points to take the lead for good, as they held on for the victory.
The Zips won despite some problems at the charity stripe, shooting just 12- of-24 from the free-throw line. Kent State finished the night with a 43-35 edge in rebounding.
