Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Otto Porter scored 20 points for the Georgetown Hoyas as they defeated the Providence Friars, 74-65, in a Big East showdown at the Verizon Center.
Porter was 8-of-13 from the field with eight rebounds and two steals for the Hoyas (12-3, 2-2 Big East), who won their second in a row after a two-game slump. Markel Starks added 16 points, seven assists, and three steals. Nate Lubick scored 10 while Mikael Hopkins scored eight in addition to his four blocks on the defensive end.
Bryce Cotton led all scorers with 21 points for the Friars (9-8, 1-4), who have lost six of their last seven games. Kadeem Batts (10 points, 11 rebounds) and LaDontae Henton (14 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles while Vincent Council scored 10 points and dealt out nine assists.
Georgetown took a huge 38-19 lead into halftime after shooting 66.7 percent from the field and holding the Friars to just 27.6 percent shooting.
Providence outscored the Hoyas, 46-36, in the second half, by shooting 48.3 percent from the field and knocking down 6-of-12 3-point attempts, but it was too little, too late.
The Friars earned a 39-27 rebounding edge but only shot 37.9 percent from the field throughout the game while allowing the Hoyas to shoot at an efficient 53.2 percent.
