Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Trevor Gaskins and Romario Souza each scored 16 points as the fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech Bulldogs held off a late comeback attempt by the fourth-seeded Utah State Aggies to win 72-70 in its quarterfinal game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Orleans Arena.
Brandon Gibson and Raheem Appleby put up 13 points apiece for Louisiana Tech (17-15), who will play regular-season champion Nevada in the semifinals on Friday.
For Utah State (17-15), Danny Berger led all scorers with 17 points, while Brockeith Pane added 13 points and Ben Clifford chipped in with 12 points.
Louisiana Tech shot 50 percent from the field in the first half as it took a 35-32 lead into the break.
The game appeared to be well in hand late in the second half after a three- point play by Appleby gave the Bulldogs a 69-59 lead with 4:05 to play. The Aggies would not go quietly however, as they went on a 10-2 run to get within two, 71-69, with 1:35 left. The teams went scoreless until Pane was fouled with nine seconds left and he was sent to the line with a chance for the Aggies to tie, but he hit just 1-of-2 free-throws. Trevor Gaskins hit 1-of-2 free-throws for the Bulldogs on the other end, but Utah State would not get another shot off.
Louisiana Tech shot 8-of-17 from three-point range, while Utah State made only 4-of-11 from long range.
