Riverside, CA (Sports Network) - Phil Martin scored 21 points and UC Riverside finally got the edge on Southern Utah late in the second half in a 57-52 victory in a BracketBusters matchup.
Daymond Cowlah and David Chavarria each contributed 10 points for the Highlanders (12-15), who snapped a three-game slide. Kevin Bradshaw scored eight for the hosts, who overcame a 34.8 percent shooting performance in the second half.
Ray Jones Jr. had 18 points for Southern Utah (13-15), which lost its third straight. Jackson Stevenett added 13 points and Matt Massey 10 for the Thunderbirds, who went 5-of-23 from the floor over the final 20 minutes.
Martin's jumper put the hosts on top at 52-50 with 2:29 left, and Cowlah made 1-of-2 at the foul line with under a minute remaining.
Stevenett banked in a jumper with 26 seconds to go. The Thunderbirds fouled Martin, who made both foul shots with 20.7 seconds on the clock.
Stevenett missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game with six seconds to go. Cowlah got the rebound, was fouled, and hit both free throws to seal the outcome.
