GAME NOTES: The Jacksonville State Gamecocks and Southern University Jaguars will take part in the Skip Prosser Tournament this evening at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans.
Southern was in action on Friday night and posted a 66-57 victory over MacMurray College. The win was just the third on the season for the Jaguars, whose only other victories this season have come against Dillard (67-48) and Florida A&M (64-61). The team had dropped two straight until the win over the Highlanders.
The Gamecocks have also struggled on the year thus far, entering Saturday's action with just two wins against six losses. The wins came against Miles College (87-64) and Alabama State (78-65), but Jacksonville State has dropped four straight entering this game, including a 50-48 decision against USC- Upstate nine days ago.
This is the first time these two teams have met on the hardwood.
The Jaguars shot just 34.9 percent from the floor against MacMurray, but it was enough, as the Highlanders struggled with a 28.3 percent clip overall, in a nine-point win for Southern on Friday night. Quinton Doggett had a dominant performance however, as he finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, taking advantage of MacMurray's smaller frontline. Russell Hill also made his presence felt in the victory, as he tallied 18 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes of work off the bench. Doggett is one of the keys to Southern's season this year, as he came into last night averaging 10.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game - numbers that will increase with his strong performance.
The Gamecocks' problems this season stem from a lack of offensive punch. The team is shooting a pedestrian .421 from the floor, a number weighed down by a poor .286 showing from behind the arc. The team has a trio of double-digit threats, but none are prolific scorers. Tarvin Gaines leads the way with 11.9 ppg, followed by Brian Williams and Stephen Hall at 10.9 and 10.7 ppg, respectively. The Gamecocks held a 15-point lead in the second half, but were helpless, as USC-Upstate came roaring back and won the game by two points. Once again, a lack of consistency was the main culprit. After shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first half, the Gamecocks fell to a mere 26.3 percent after the break. Hall led the way in defeat with nine points and six rebounds.
Neither team is all that polished at the offensive end, but Doggett's big game on Friday should give him a lot of confidence. Much like the Highlanders, the Gamecocks lack any real size down low.
