No. 4 Kansas State rebounds from Duke loss
Manhattan, KS (Sports Network) - Jacob Pullen led a well-rounded Kansas State attack with 16 points and seven assists as the fourth-ranked Wildcats dismantled Texas Southern, 84-60, at Bramlage Coliseum.
Curtis Kelly had 13 points coming off the bench and Rodney McGruder added 10 points for Kansas State (5-1), which rebounded from a devastating 82-62 loss to No. 1 Duke on Tuesday.
"I thought we bounced back well," Pullen said. "We did a good job of guarding the ball and forcing them into things that we wanted to do so we could get into position to take some charges and force the tempo of the game, to speed it up. We took some good shots and we really attacked the offensive glass. I think (Coach) Frank (Martin) was pleased for the most part through the first 30-some minutes."
Lawrence Johnson-Danner led all scorers with 18 points for Texas Southern (1-5), which has yet to play a home game this season. Kevin Galloway had 15 points and 10 assists and Aaron Clayborn chipped in with 12 points in the defeat.
"I know that I have two solid and proven scorers and I know that I have some scorers that are sitting out," said Texas Southern head coach Tony Harvey. "We have some guys that are solid contributors. I think that Aaron Clayborn is capable of giving me more minutes and more points. Daniel King is capable of giving us more points and rebounds and things to that extent. We are much better than we showed tonight. We just have to build off of it."
After a slow start, Kansas State took its first lead on a McGruder three- pointer 3 1/2 minutes into the game. That was part of a lengthy 26-3 run capped by a Wally Judge jump shot to make it 30-11 with about seven minutes remaining in the half.
The Wildcats scored seven of the final nine points and took a 44-18 halftime edge with a Martavious Irving jumper inside the final minute.
Kansas State started the second half with a blistering 12-4 run finished by a Kelly jump shot. The Tigers never made it a game, while the Wildcats kept a large lead the rest of the way.
