GAME NOTES: Austin Peay hopes to halt a three-game skid as the Governors will battle it out with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the opening day of the Chicago Invitational Tournament.
Charleston Southern has found it difficult to win away from home this season. The Buccaneers have won both games in front of the hometown fans while falling in all three of their road contests, the most recent of which was an 85-67 decision at Southern Illinois on Tuesday.
Austin Peay came out of the gate hot, winning its first two games of the season. However, since then the Governors have cooled off quite a bit, losing three consecutive affairs, including an 87-65 verdict at Purdue on Tuesday.
This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams on the hardwood.
Redshirt sophomore forward Kenny Mitchell was the only member of Charleston Southern to reach double figures in scoring in the Buccaneers' 87-65 loss to Southern Illinois. Mitchell scored 15 points while recording the team's lone block of the night. Junior forward Kelvin Martin led all rebounders in the game, tearing down 14 boards while contributing nine points of his own. The Buccaneers found themselves trailing by 27 points at the intermission, 55-28, after connecting on just 31 percent of their shots from the floor in the opening half. Charleston Southern's defense wasn't of any help, allowing Southern Illinois to shoot a healthy 67.7 percent from the field in the opening stanza. The Buccaneers did show good discipline during the affair, however, committing a season-low six turnovers.
Austin Peay has yet to play a game at home thus far, and it's beginning to show that the Governors may be getting a bit homesick as the team has dropped three straight games, including an 87-65 loss at Purdue. Leading scorer Tyshwan Edmondson paced the Govs with 16 points in the setback. The junior guard is netting 17.4 ppg while grabbing 4.2 rpg. Junior center John Fraley recorded a double-double consisting of 11 points and 13 boards against the Boilermakers. Austin Peay wasn't very comfortable from long range as the team was only able to convert one of its 10 attempts from beyond the arc. The Govs are averaging 73.0 ppg on 47.3 percent shooting from the field, while giving up 78.4 ppg on 48.1 percent shooting.
While Austin Peay has struggled of late, Charleston Southern's woes away from home are hard to overlook. The Govs should be able to handle the Buccaneers rather easily this afternoon.
