GAME NOTES: The Lipscomb Bisons continue their schedule of tough opponents tonight as they challenge the Baylor Bears in non-conference action in Waco.
The Bisons are on a mini run of sorts at the moment, scoring in triple digits in the last two games, both of which ended up in the win column for the squad. First it was a 103-78 blowout of Stillman College a week ago and then Thursday night saw the squad secure a 104-101 overtime triumph versus Austin Peay at home.
As for the Bears, their early-season schedule has been filled with suspect opponents, ones that Baylor has been able to outscore by a margin of almost 20 ppg. Wins over Grambling State, La Salle and Jackson State have all come in Waco for the Bears.
Lipscomb has had no luck against nationally-ranked opponents over the years, dropping all four such matchups. The most recent setback against a national power came just 10 days ago when the squad took an 80-66 tumble versus eighth- ranked North Carolina. At the end of December the Bisons are set to take on Memphis, their third ranked squad in a span of less than two months.
With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, this is the first-ever meeting. Lipscomb is 0-5 versus opponents from the Big 12 Conference all-time.
Adnan Hodzic scored 33 points and pulled down 16 rebounds last week as the Bisons took care of Austin Peay in overtime by three points. Hodzic converted all nine of his free-throw chances and 12-of-15 shots from the floor in the triumph, while Josh Slater overcame a 2-of-9 shooting effort beyond the arc to compile 22 points, to go along with his eight rebounds and seven assists. Jordan Burgason came in off the bench to convert 5-of-11 three-point tries and finish with 19 points of his own. The Bisons shot 52.5 percent from the field for the game and 30-of-40 at the free-throw line. Shooting 60 percent from the floor over the first three games, Hodzic is averaging a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds per contest. Not far behind is Slater who is generating 20.3 ppg and 9.0 rpg of his own to give Lipscomb a very strong front line that works hard in the paint.
The big news for the Bears is not that they are 3-0 against weak opponents, but that LaceDarius Dunn is ready to make his 2010-11 debut for the team tonight. One of the top players in the Big 12 Conference and on the list for the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, Dunn enters this season meeting just 451 points to become the school's all-time leading scorer and 518 points to put his name at the top of the list in the Big 12 as well. In his absence Quincy Acy has led five players in double figures with his 17.7 ppg, adding a powerful 9.7 rpg as well to pace the Bears. Perry Jones III has accounted for 14.3 ppg and another 9.0 rpg, followed by Anthony Jones with 12.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg. It should come as little surprise that the Bears are crushing opponents on the glass already with an advantage of more than 14 rpg. Against Jackson State, Baylor held the visitors to a mere three offensive rebounds and forced 20 turnovers as the hosts got 20 points and eight boards from Jones III and 14 points, five assists and four steals out of A.J. Walton.
Just another patsy on Baylor's early-season list, Lipscomb doesn't stand a chance in this outing, especially with the hype surrounding the return of Dunn.
