Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Freshman Travis McKie scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in leading the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 63-56 victory over the Hampton Pirates in the East Region of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
C.J. Harris added 13 points while Ari Stewart tore down 10 boards in the win for Wake Forest (1-1), which will not take on VCU in the next round on Tuesday night.
Hampton (0-1) was led by Darrion Pellum's 15 points in the loss, while Charles Funches added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Wake Forest took a 34-23 advantage into the intermission after holding the Pirates to a lackluster 22.5 percent shooting from the floor in the first half.
The Demon Deacons were able to hold on to the win despite shooting just 36.0 percent from field-goal range in the second stanza.
Hampton squandered 18 offensive rebounds while turning the ball over just nine times on the night.
