GAME NOTES: The TCU Horned Frogs welcome the Colgate Raiders to Fort Worth this evening as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Colgate opened the season with a 77-63 loss to an outstanding Connecticut team on the road. The Raiders then fell to 0-2 last Tuesday with a 65-55 loss to Yale.
As for TCU, it opened the season with back-to-back victories over a pair of weak opponents, but the last two outings have seen a spike in competition level. As a result, the Horned Frogs fell to Arizona State last Tuesday, and then dropped a 90-77 decision to Nebraska on Saturday.
TCU and Colgate have split two previous meetings between them.
Colgate has had trouble generating offense so far this season, as the team is scoring a mere 59.0 ppg. Defensively, the club is allowing 71.0 ppg to its opponents, and the Raiders are being outrebounded by 6.5 rpg. Kyle Roemer is the leading scorer for Colgate, as he is posting 15.0 ppg despite his 35.5 percent shooting from the field. Mike Venezia is close behind with his 14.0 ppg, and Yaw Gyawu provides 12.0 ppg. In the loss to Yale last time out, Colgate committed 19 turnovers and suffered a 38-27 rebounding disadvantage. The negatives overshadowed the fact that the Raiders limited the Bulldogs to 37.5 percent shooting from the floor. Roemer scored 18 points for Colgate, which got 12 points from Gyawu. As for Venezia, he finished with 11 points.
Ronnie Moss is a tremendous player for TCU, as he is scoring 20.8 ppg through the first four outings of this season. While Moss is the go-to guy at the offensive end, he doesn't have to carry the load alone. Edvinas Ruzgas is scoring 13.8 ppg for TCU, and Zvonko Buljan checks in with 11.0 ppg and 11.8 rpg. The Horned Frogs are netting 70.8 ppg while allowing 69.0 ppg to the opposition. Moss scored 23 points and dished out five assists to lead TCU in defeat against Nebraska last time out. Both Greg Hill and Garlon Green pitched in 11 points for the Horned Frogs, who turned the ball over 18 times and suffered a 35-24 rebounding disadvantage, the two most obvious contributing factors in the loss.
TCU has the advantage of playing at home in this clash and figures to hand Colgate another loss. The Horned Frogs will jump on top early and never look back.
