South Carolina slips past Auburn
Auburn, AL (SportNetwork.com) - Tiffany Mitchell overcame seven turnovers by posting 18 points as No. 10 South Carolina kept its early-season success going with a 72-66 win over Auburn on Sunday afternoon.
Alaina Coates had 14 points and six rebounds for the Lady Gamecocks (16-1, 3-0 SEC), who received 10 points from Aleighsa Welch and shot 68.8 percent in the second half en route to victory.
Tyrese Tanner totaled 16 points and five boards for the Tigers (10-6, 1-2), who have dropped three of four. Brandy Montgomery totaled 13 in a losing cause.
Auburn led 9-2 in the early stages, and took a 25-13 edge with 8:31 left in the first half on a Tanner bucket, but South Carolina snapped to attention, eventually coming back to tie at the break after two Mitchell free throws made it 39-all.
A 10-3 Gamecocks run which ended just prior to the midway point of the second half gave the visitors a 55-48 edge thanks to a Mitchell jumper, but Auburn scored seven straight to tie on a Katie Frerking triple.
Khadijah Sessions countered with a trey to kick off a deciding 13-2 burst, ended on a shot from long distance by Mitchell with 2:17 to play that gave SC a 68-57 lead.
