San Juan, PR (Sports Network) - Mike Aviles led the way with a two-run single and three RBI as Puerto Rico downed Venezuela, 6-3, in Pool C action at the World Baseball Classic.
Luis Figueroa added a two-run double in the eighth inning for Puerto Rico (2-0), which takes on the Dominican Republic on Sunday. Saturday's win guaranteed Puerto Rico a spot in the second round.
Nelson Figueroa earned the win after allowing five hits and two runs over four innings.
Martin Prado totaled two hits and an RBI, while Pablo Sandoval also drove in a run for Venezuela (0-2), which takes on Spain on Sunday.
Tied at 2-2 in the fifth, Martin Maldonado led off with a walk, moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Angel Pagan's base hit to give Puerto Rico the lead for good.
Rios was plunked to start the eighth, then Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina singled to load the bases. Aviles' sac fly brought home one run and Figueroa's double later in the frame provided a four-run edge for the victors.
