Mexico City, MX (Sports Network) - Ariel Pestano and Frederich Cepeda each hit a three-run homer in a nine-run seventh inning for Cuba, which secured the top seed from Pool B with a 16-4 win over Mexico.
Yulieski Gourriel hit a two-run homer as part of a two-hit, four RBI game for Cuba, which will play its first game of Round 2 against defending champion Japan, on Sunday afternoon. Japan defeated Cuba in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
Michel Enriquez went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Yoennis Cespedes went 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI in Cuba's win. Ciro Licea pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the start, while Yulieski Gonzalez got the win after throwing two innings of relief, in which he allowed one run on a hit and two walks.
Freddy Sandoval went 2-for-3 with one of Mexico's three solo homers, as Oscar Robles and Karim Garcia also went deep. Francisco Campos took the loss after allowing four runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Mexico will play Korea, the top seed from Pool A, on Sunday night.
Cuba held a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, then broke the game apart.
Gourriel started the scoring with a two-run double with no outs, and later, Pestano hit a three-run shot to make it a 13-4 contest. Cepeda's three-run homer with one away got the Cuba lead to 10, enforcing the mercy rule.
