Surprising Dutch hope for another upset in San Juan

San Juan, Puerto Rico (Sports Network) - The Netherlands hopes to continue its remarkable World Baseball Classic run this evening, as it tries to earn the top seed from Pool D against Puerto Rico at Hiram Bithorn Stadium.

The Netherlands stunned the Dominican Republic for the second time and advanced to second round on Tuesday, as Gene Kingsale scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th on an error by Willy Aybar, lifting the Dutch to a 2-1 win.

With the win, the Netherlands eliminated the heavily favored Dominican Republic team from the tournament.

The Netherlands lost to Puerto Rico on Monday, as Jose Oquendo's club scored three times in the eighth inning to eke out a 3-1 victory.

Puerto Rico, which will have left-hander Jonathan Sanchez on the mound this evening, will be trying to retain its perfect record of 5-0 in first-round play in the WBC.

In the 2006 Classic, Puerto Rico boasted a 3-0 record in the first round.

Tonight's winner will earn the right to play its first game of Round 2 against the second seed of Pool C on Saturday evening. The loser plays the top seed of Pool C on Saturday afternoon.
