Petkovic tops Cepelova for Charleston crown

Charleston, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrea Petkovic claimed her first WTA title in nearly three years with a straight-set victory over Jana Cepelova in Sunday's final of the Family Circle Cup.

Petkovic earned a 7-5, 6-2 triumph on Sunday for her third WTA crown and first since winning in Strasbourg in May of 2011. Her first title came in Bad Gastein in 2009.

Sunday's win came after a couple of years that saw Petkovic battle a myriad of injuries.

"I was just so relieved and proud that I've come back from all these injuries, and I never thought I would play in the finals of the big tournaments again, and so I was just proud and happy and everything just sort of came together," said Petkovic, who was ranked as high as No. 9 in 2011.

The German, seeded 14th this week, was down 4-5 in the first set and fought off a set point. She then reeled off eight straight games to take control and improved to 3-5 all-time in WTA finals.

Cepelova, who knocked off world No. 1 Serena Williams in the second round, was bidding to become the first player since Sabine Lisicki in 2009 to claim her maiden title in Charleston.
