Ivanovic, Hantuchova roll in Birmingham
Birmingham, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seed Ana Ivanovic and reigning champion Daniela Hantuchova were easy second-round winners Tuesday at the Aegon Classic, a grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.
The former world No. 1 star Ivanovic handled German Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-1, while the seventh-seeded Hantuchova dismissed Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-4 at Edgbaston Priory Club.
Ivanovic doesn't typically play her best tennis on grass.
"I haven't had the most success on grass," she admitted. "I really hope I manage to turn that around. On grass courts it's a lot about mentality and also the game plan, because everything happens so fast.
"It's the first time I am working with my coach (Nemanja Kontic) on grass, so hopefully he can bring some innovations that will help me make that change."
The Slovakian Hantuchova beat Croat Donna Vekic in last year's Birmingham finale and was the runner-up here in 2011.
Also in the second round, American Coco Vandeweghe took out Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 and Lauren Davis edged out qualifier fellow American Victoria Duval 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Wickmayer was a Birmingham runner-up in 2008.
In opening-round action involving seeds on Day 2, No. 12 Monica Puig, of Puerto Rico, overcame Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2, Aussie wild card Johanna Konta upended No. 14 Kurumi Nara, of Japan, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 16 Aussie Casey Dellacqua pasted Pole Urszula Radwanska 6-1, 6-3.
Several other women notched first-round wins, including American Christina McHale and Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak. McHale topped Slovak Anna Schmiedlova 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
In some second-round action on Wednesday, second-seeded former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur will meet McHale and third-seeded American Sloane Stephens will face former French Open champ Francesca Schiavone.
