Suarez Navarro advances in Poland
Katowice, Poland (SportsNetwork.com) - No. 3 seed Carla Suarez Navarro was an easy first-round winner Monday at the WTA's BNP Paribas Katowice Open.
The nifty Spaniard doused Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-0 on the indoor clay at Spodek.
Also on Day 1, rising Italian Camila Giorgi clobbered Poland's Katarzyna Piter 6-0, 6-1; Romanian Alexandra Cadantu overcame Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-1, 6-1; Israeli veteran Shahar Peer handled Croat Petra Martic 6-4, 6-4; and German Annika Beck dismissed compatriot Mona Barthel 6-1, 6-4.
This week's top seeds are Polish favorite Agnieszka Radwanska and reigning champion Roberta Vinci, who upset former Wimbledon titlist Petra Kvitova in last year's inaugural Katowice finale. Radwanska will face Czech wild card Kristyna Pliskova, while Vinci will battle Russian qualifier Ksenia Pervak on Tuesday.
The 2014 champion here will collect $43,000.
