Serena defeats Li for seventh Miami crown
Key Biscayne, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - American Serena Williams claimed her seventh Miami title with a straight-set victory over Li Na of China.
The world No. 1 Williams responded from a slow start to beat the second-seeded Li by a 7-5, 6-1 margin in Saturday's final of the Sony Open.
Down 5-2 in the first set, Williams woke up and won the final five games of the set to take control. The American cruised to victory in the second set.
"She started out so well - I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I just need to hang in here'," said Williams. "Then I heard some fans trying to pull me through. If it hadn't been for [the fans] I wouldn't be standing here right now."
Williams, who improved to 7-2 in Miami finals, became the fourth woman in the Open Era to win the same tournament seven times.
The 32-year-old Williams improved to 11-1 lifetime against Li, who won her second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January.
"I don't think I was playing badly, [Williams] just started playing a little bit better after she was 5-2 down," said Li afterward.
Williams, the reigning U.S. and French Open champion, captured her 59th singles title.
Williams took home $787,000 with the victory.
