Serena to face Li in Miami final

Key Biscayne, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Six-time champion Serena Williams defeated five-time runner-up Maria Sharapova to reach yet another final at the $5.4 million Sony Open tennis event.

Second-seeded Li Na defeated 10th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova by a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 margin in the other semifinal match on Thursday.

The world No. 1 Williams dismissed the fourth-seeded former top-ranked star Sharapova in 6-4, 6-3 fashion in 1 hour, 37 minutes on the hardcourts at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. Williams swatted nine aces, while Sharapova committed five double faults, had her serve broken five times and piled up 29 unforced errors on Day 10.

Sharapova led 4-1 in the first set and 2-0 in the second en route to defeat.

Williams also topped Sharapova in last year's final here to capture a record sixth Miami title and hand the tall Russian her fifth loss in five finals at this lucrative tournament.

The 32-year-old Williams is now a dominant 16-2 lifetime against Sharapova, including 15 straight wins dating back to 2004. The American great is 4-0 versus the Russian in Miami, where Williams will appear in her ninth final on Saturday.

The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., resident Williams is 14-2 overall this season.

The 26-year-old Sharapova will drop to No. 8 in the rankings on Monday, her lowest position since 2011.

Williams' opponent in the title match will be Li, who will play in her first Miami final.

Cibulkova is winless in seven career meetings against Li, including a loss in the final at this year's Australian Open.

Williams is 10-1 lifetime against Li.

The 2014 Sony Open champ will collect $787,000.
