| | NOTES: In a match that was supposed to be a runaway for Serena Williams, Samantha Stosur stunned the 13-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to capture her first U.S. Open championship.
Stosur became the first Australian woman to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won at Wimbledon in 1980, doing so against a future Hall-of-Famer who had not lost a set leading up to the final.
After five lackluster appearances at the U.S. Open, Stosur reached the quarterfinals in 2010, before losing to eventual champion Kim Clijsters in three sets.
To say that her victory last year was quite unexpected would be an understatement. "I can't actually believe I won this tournament," Stosur said. "To go out there and play the way I did is obviously just an unbelievable feeling. You always hope and want to be able to do that, but to actually do that is unbelievable."
Heading into the championship, Stosur had lost in the final to Serena in the Rogers Cup and then dropped a quarterfinal match against Maria Sharapova in Cincinnati. But her run in New York was as good as it gets, as she dropped only three sets along the way, two of which were tiebreaks.
For the 16th straight year, the championship ended in two sets. The last three-set final was back in 1995, when Steffi Graf defeated Monica Seles, 7-6 (8-6), 0-6, 6-3.
Kim Clijsters successfully defended her title in 2010, as she put on a dominating performance in defeating Vera Zvonareva, 6-2, 6-1. Clijsters became the first back-to-back winner since Venus Williams won consecutive titles in 2000-01.
Clijsters won her 21st match in a row to become the first woman to win titles in three straight appearances at the event since Chris Evert won four from 1975 through 1978. The lopsided affair took a total of 60 minutes as Clijsters took advantage of 24 unforced errors by her challenger to win her third U.S. Open championship.
Following a two-year retirement to start a family, Clijsters returned in 2009 to the U.S. Open in smashing style, as she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets to become the first-ever female to win the event as a wild card.
Clijsters dominated the championship, as she defeated both Serena and Venus Williams along the way and lost only two sets for the entire tournament. The win enabled Clijsters to become only the third unseeded woman ever to win a Grand Slam event and the first since Serena claimed the 2007 Australian Open title.
Right-handers have won a total of 118 championships, including 18 straight, while left-handers have won seven. Martina Navratilova (4) and Monica Seles (2) have won six of the seven by lefties. Molla Bjurstedt Mallory leads the list of 28 players with multiple singles wins at this event with eight. Helen Wills Moody is second with seven, while Chris Evert tallied six.
Evert also holds a unique distinction in that she is the only player who ever won the women's singles title in the U.S. Open on a clay-court surface. She won the title at Forest Hills in 1975, 1976 and 1977 -- the only three years that it was played on Har-Tru. Evert also won it three times on the hard courts at the National Tennis Center (1978, 1980 and 1982).
Many doubles players have won titles on two surfaces, but only one -- Betty Stove of The Netherlands, in women's doubles -- was part of winning teams on all three (grass in 1972, clay in 1977 and hardcourt in 1979) in the same event. Both Billie Jean King and Rosemary Casals won titles on all three surfaces in various combinations of women's doubles and mixed doubles.
In the history of the national championships, a player has won all three possible titles (singles, doubles and mixed doubles) in the same year 30 times. It's been done by 21 players -- 15 women and 6 men. Martina Navratilova was the last player to accomplish this feat back in 1987. Neale Fraser was the last man to win all three, in 1960.
The 2012 U.S. Open purse will top $25.5 million, marking the fifth consecutive year that the tournament's prize money has increased by $1 million or more. In addition to the base purse, the top-three men's and top-three women's finishers in the US Open Series may earn up to an additional $2.6 million in bonus prize money at the Open, providing a potential total payout of $28.1 million.
Both the men's and women's U.S. Open singles champions will earn a record $1.9 million with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money (for a total $2.6 million potential payout) based on their performances in the US Open Series.
Top players who have withdrawn from the championship are Vera Zvonareva (viral illness), Svetlana Kuznetsova (knee), Kaia Kinepi (Achilles) and Flavia Pennetta (wrist). |
