Hewitt guts out Hall of Fame victory over Karlovic

Newport, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt persevered through a marathon three-set match on Sunday, emerging victorious against challenger Ivo Karlovic.

Aussie third-seed Hewitt gained his 30th career ATP title and second this season, taking home $81,500 after dispatching second-seeded Croat Karlovic 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3) in a match which took 2 1/2 hours to complete.

In the process, Hewitt also avenged a loss to France's Nicolas Mahut in last year's final here and managed to beat his opponent for just the second time in their six meetings and for the first time in four on grass.

It happened despite Karlovic recording an amazing 26 aces to just five for Hewitt, who also just won four of 14 break points in the match.

Karlovic fell to 5-6 all-time in tournament finals and all three this season, following defeats to Kei Nishikori in Memphis in February and to Philipp Kohlschreiber in Dusseldorf in May.
